A question we are often asked by clients on any high-tech software project is why do we need to test. Experience tells us yes, although how much time and money you wish to invest is a matter of complexity, risk and history.
Testing in manufacturing has evolved over time, from the era where the Guilds where created, through mass production and inspection through to statistical, strategic quality management the recognized approach today. It is cheaper for manufacturer to design quality from the beginning - recalls and replacement programmes of physical goods are time internsive and expensive. Often this is not seen with IT or non-physical products or services. We would argue that the manufacturing process is best - it may not be as expensive to skip on quality in software, as with the advent of the internet, creating fixes and patches is the norm, howver, just how big is the real cost? Obviously there is a balance to be struck, too much Quality Management and Testing can mean a product never sees the light of day - too little can mean the same. To decide how much testing is appropriate, it is important to learn from your experiences, decide how much risk you are willing to take, and speak to experienced professionals who can help you make the right choices for your business. And always see it as an investment, never a cost.
